New Year...New Start....Same Goal


Hello All!


I Know it's been some time since i have updated but the back end of last year hasn't been the best. after a family illness and a few other issues, it been difficult to things sorted! but as we swiftly move in 2013, all is well and i have made some decent progress.

Since my last post, my training regime has somewhat changed, as i have moved to a new gym and i have acquired a fantastic work out & nutrition planner - LDNMuscle. With there help, i now have a fantastic training plan, to cater for all of my challenges. this involves 4 full sessions hitting all the main muscle groups HARD! along with some decent HIIT cardio sessions too!. for anyone wanting nutrition & workout advice, along with hints and tips visit www.ldnmuscle.com or follow @LDN_muscle on facebook and twitter.

So with decent feedback from company's regarding sponsorship, it was on to the planning for the challenges. First up, the mighty Hadrian's wall. it's difficult one, not just for the distance but to do it in how many days. We have planned to do it in 5 days and our itinerary is as follows :

THURSDAY 2nd OF MAY - Wallsend to East Wallhouses (18miles/29k)

FRIDAY 3rd OF MAY - Wallhouses to Chollerford (12miles/19k)

SATURDAY 4th OF MAY - Chollerford to Gisland (21mile/33.5k)

SUNDAY 5th OF MAY - Gisland to Carlisle (18.5 mile/29.5k)

MONDAY 6TH - Carlisle to Bowness-on-Solway (14.5 mile/23k) - FINISH

Weather conditions permitting, this is how it should pan out. With what looks like a very daunting challenge, it will take some super training!

So that's pretty much it for the first blog of the year, and the first post of many regarding my triple challenge. lets not forget why i am doing all this. my charity, the motor neurone disease is a fantastic charity who help all sufferers with MND, including my good friend Keith Hallway. All monies raised will go towards the on going help and support to sufferers and the continued research into finding a cure for this awful disease. WEEK 1

WEEK 1

 
 
Well, this was always going to be a tough week! but receiving some of the early donations and well wished messages, started me in a positive mood. Other than breaking my cross trainer on the first day, everything pretty much went to plan. and as you'll see later, my first big training session at scafell pike went really well. here's the run down of my first week of training and events....
 
 
MONDAY
My 1.8 mile walk to work went well and had some cracking weather too, spurred on by the tramps in the west park, i made some decent time in around 20mins (ish). as my evening cardio session came along, i was good to go, but i was soon knocked down as my cross trainer broke. so i had to take to the streets of sunny south shields for a steady 2mile jog.
 
TUESDAY
The usual walk to work in the morning, come evening, i headed to monkton stadium for my gym/track session. For you who don't know, on Tuesdays and Thursdays i coach athletics at monkton stadium so in terms of my running session's i will be doing them on the track. today my session was...
4 x 200m
2 x 400m
1 x 800m
To be honest i found this pretty tough, these are the session i really look to improve on.
 
WEDNESDAY - DAY OF RECOVERY
 
THURSDAY
My MNDA fundrasing pack arrived! a huge amount of goodies to get started with, i cant thank them enough for the amount of support. My training for today included 35mins cardio on the bike in the gym (gutted i still can't do weight due to my knacked shoulder) and 4 x 600m on the track before my coaching session.

FRIDAY - REST BEFORE SCAFELL
 
SATURDAY
Well, this was it! scafell pike, highest mountain in Britain! i could have chosen an easier session to start off with. The weather was perfect for tackling a mountain of this height and the views were amazing (as you'll see in the pics). We completed scafell in roughly 3 and a half hours witch is good going seen as i haven't walked a decent distance for about 8-9 months.
 
the first hour 45 was some of the toughest walking I've ever done (even harder than Ben Nevis in 2010). But when your getting over taken by kids and pensioners, its enough to spur you on! grit your teeth and get on with it. every time you stopped, a turn to the right made the pain all worth while with some fantastic views.
 
Once you get just over halfway (around 2500ft) the surface levels out. But just as you think the worst part is over, BOOM the ascent to the summit begins!. The ascent seems endless at times, so much so, we had mistaken one of the cairns as the summit only to realise the trig point about 80-100ft in the distance, wishful thinking, eh?.
 
It was a hard finish to the summit, but we eventually made it with the view to die for!. and even though there was a number of keen walkers already at the top, once you were there it seemed as if you we alone. very peaceful and a tad surreal, seen as your at the highest point in England.
 
on the way back down you truly appreciate the steepness of scafell, without my stick, i must of went over at least half a dozen times. Past the half way mark, i could definitely feel every rock under my feet. Its not exactly a hard descent (fitness wise) but very tough on the bones especially my knees.
 
Eventually at the bottom, i look back at scafell and it hits just how much of a MASSIVE task it is.

So that was my first week, quite an eventful one. more to come, much tougher sessions and some longer walks.

SO.......IT BEGINS

Theres no time like the present!


So as i finish my last bit of Galaxy chocolate and drink the dregs of my last bud, it suddenly hits me that this triple challenge isn't going to be the easiest thing I've done! for you who don't know, i am embarking(mad) on a triple challenge throughout 2013! my itinerary is as follows :

May - walk the Hadrian's wall path (84 miles)

July - complete the assent of the three peaks (Ben Nevis, scafell pike and snowdon)

September - complete the great north run 2013

with this in mind, iam looking to raise a massive £3000 the motor neuron disease association.

Speaking of the great north run, i observed the thousands of athletes that come past me today and couldn't help but admire the grit and determination that each of them had, for their personal and charity goals. well done to all who took part.

It also made me think of my own personal challenge and who iam doing it for. I am doing this challenge for my good friend Keith 'halla' hallway and on behalf of the charity who helps him, the motor neuron disease association. The MNDA supports hundreds of MND sufferers every day with the day to day tasks we take for granted and all at MNDA are dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by MND, now and in the future. All donations will also go towards the research of this little known disease. So onto the training.

I am looking ahead to my first week of PROPER training, witch will include alot of running, cardio and lots of walking!....in nice places though.

my first big training exercise will be on Saturday 22nd of September where i will face the mighty scafell pike (tallest mountain in England at 3209ft) witch of course i will keep you updated here, so keep checking back!.

along with that, i will keep you up to date with my day to day training between now and the next 52 weeks.
